Thread Options

Mercerized cotton thread comes in multiple sizes, from size 3 to 100. The size of thread is inversely correlated to the number it is labeled with. What does that mean? It means the bigger the number, the thinner the thread or the smaller the number, the larger the thread. For example, a size 10 cotton thread is thicker than a size 40 cotton thread. If you have a hard time remembering which is which (like I did when I first started tatting), imagine that the number is how many times you can wrap the thread around a ruler and fill an inch. 10 wraps to fill an inch versus 40 wraps. Is that the real reason for how they decided to label it? I don't think so but I haven't been able to find proof one way or the other. But it helps me remember which is bigger so it works for me.
